Since becoming a bonafide yoga teacher and professional hippie, I’m always on the lookout for ways to make my home more natural and less toxic. One of the best solutions I’ve discovered is the use of essential oils, and I’ve been using them for a long time now – to replace chemical-laden items in my beauty cupboard and my medicine cabinet. Essential oils are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants. They protect plants against environmental factors and can provide beneficial properties. They are highly concentrated when distilled for purity, potency and efficacy. Historically, they have been used for food preparation, beauty treatment and health care practices.
One of my favourite essential oil combos is an easy healing spray, which is great for cuts, scrapes, skin irritations and minor burns (including sunburn). It’s a combination of Lavender, Melaluca (tea tree) and Frankincense essential oils, and can be mixed with water, your favourite moisturizer or a carrier oil (like almond, jojoba or fractionated coconut oil) to make a soothing spray or rub. For burns (especially sunburn), I like to mix these three oils with my favourite after-sun lotion (Pai Skincare’s Comfrey and Calendula Calming Body Lotion to quickly alleviate the heat and irritation. I find scrapes and cuts heal quickly when I use these oils.
Lavender essential oil is widely used for its calming and relaxing qualities and soothes occasional skin irritations. It has the added benefit of reducing the appearance of skin imperfections, and it smells lovely too!
Frankincense is one of the most prized and precious essential oils due to its extensive health benefits. It comes from the Boswellia species of tree and is native to Ethiopia, Somalia, India and the Arabic Peninsula and has been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese health practices. It has a strong smell, which I love on its own, but it also smells incredible when blended with woody and/or citrus oils (i.e. lavender, cedarwood, orange, lemon, etc). In ancient times, Frankincense was used in perfumes and lotions for soothing skin, and can reduce the appearance of blemishes and rejuvenate the skin.
Melaleuca (Tea Tree)
When I started with essential oils, I found Melaluca really strong smelling and I didn’t like it. Now, after using it in my homemade household cleaners and in my beauty routine for blemishes, I find its medicinal smell clean and fresh and I love it! Melaleuca is renowned for its cleansing and rejuvenating effect on the skin, and can provide added cleansing properties when combined with cleansers or moisturisers. It can also be beneficial (because of its cleansing effect) for occasional skin irritations.
Not all essential oils are created/distilled equally, and to be honest, when I first started using essential oils, I didn’t really see any benefit (but, to be fair, I hadn’t been picky about the oils that I was using). I now use only doTERRA essential oils, because they are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (I have noticed the incredible difference that this makes). This ensures that they are pure, with no added fillers, synthetic ingredients or harmful contaminants that would reduce the efficacy of the oils. An essential oil that isn’t pure means you run the risk of putting germs, heavy metals, or adulterants onto or into your body, which can provoke irritation, adverse effects, or even sickness. doTERRA puts all their products and the packaging through a battery of tests to ensure a long and effective shelf-life. This protocol ensures potency, purity, and consistency batch to batch. And the difference is obvious from the moment you open a bottle.
Soothing Skin Spray
Because the oils are so pure, they are potent and just one drop goes a long way. To make larger quantities, adjust the ratios as appropriate. I use either a 10ml roller ball, 50ml spray bottle or a small mason jar (for lotion). These are easily found online.
For young children:
- 1 drop each of doTERRA Lavender, Frankincense and Melaluca essential oils
- Combine with 10ml (2 tsp) of carrier oil or lotion
- 3 drops each of doTERRA Lavender, Frankincense and Melaluca essential oils
- Combine with 10ml of water, carrier oil or lotion

I hope you love this spray as much as I do! I took it with me on a recent holiday and used it for everything from sunburn to surfing rash to bug bites; it was a life saver!
